May 19th, 2012

Stanford ace Mark Appel threw a four-hit shutout with 13 strikeouts as the Cardinal beat the host Utah Utes 6-0 in a Pac-12 baseball game Friday evening.

Utah starter Brock Duke (2-6) took the loss, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits with six strikeouts over six innings. Josh Chapman pitched the final three innings, allowing two runs on five hits with two strikeouts.

The Utes (14-36, 7-21) left two runners on base in the second inning after Gavin Green singled up the middle with two out, and Jo Jo Sharrar reached on an error before Ethan Leiter struck out to end the inning.

Stanford took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning on Eric Smith’s two-run single with the bases loaded.

Utah stranded a pair of runners on base in the sixth inning, after Tyler Relf and Parker Morin had back-to-back singles with two out before Appel (9-1) got a strikeout to end the inning.

The Cardinal continued to pull away with solo runs in the fifth, sixth, seventh and ninth innings. Jake Stewart, Danny Diekroeger and Brian Ragira each had two hits in the game for Stanford.

BYU 7, Santa Clara 3 • In Provo, Jaycob Brugman hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning for what turned out to be the game-winning RBIs in the Cougars’ West Coast Conference victory.

Kelton Caldwell went 3-for-3 with a home run, and Brock Whitney was 2-for-4 with three RBIs for the Cougars (21-24, 9-11).

BYU starter Marc Oslund (5-1) earned the win, giving up three runs on six hits while recording nine strikeouts over five innings.

Tyler Westensee gave up just one hit in three scoreless innings after relieving Oslund.

Jody Hart was 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs for UVU (42-12, 27-0 Great Conference) in the nightcap.

Oakland 10-8, Southern Utah 4-7 • In Rochester, Mich., the Thunderbirds got trounced in the opener, then gave up a five-run lead and lost Game 2. Chase Rezac finished the day 4-for-8 with a double and two RBIs to lead the T-Birds (18-33, 12-10 Summit League).

Area colleges notebook: PV closer has been unbeatable

May 15th, 2012

Prairie View A&M senior closer Daniel Castillo has a chance to accomplish a unique feat – finishing his college career without a loss.

At the conclusion of the regular season, Castillo (4-0, 1.54 ERA, five saves) is 11-0 overall in four years. Castillo went 4-0 from 2009-10 at Solano Community College in Fairfield, Calif., before transferring to Prairie View, where he is 7-0 with a 2.84 ERA in 40 appearances over two seasons.

He’ll carry that unblemished mark into this week’s Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament in Baton Rouge, La.

“I told my assistant, ‘We’ve got to put Daniel Castillo in a position to lose the game so he won’t lose the game,’ ” Prairie View coach Waskyla Cullivan said. “We put him in those tough situations, and he usually gets the save or the win.”

Castillo, a side-armer, has issued just three walks in 41 innings this season. He has a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 7.67, which would rank among Division I’s top 10 if he had enough innings to qualify (a minimum of 45 are required). Castillo’s 1.54 ERA, which leads the SWAC, would rank in the top 15 nationally if he had the required number of innings.

With Castillo anchoring the bullpen, Cullivan can breathe easy when his team holds a lead in the late innings.

“Going into the SWAC tournament, I feel very comfortable with Daniel being our closer,” Cullivan said.

Seasons conclude

The Texas Southern and Prairie View softball teams ended strong seasons Saturday in the semifinals of the SWAC tournament in Irondale, Ala. TSU fell 2-1 to Jackson State, and Prairie View dropped a 2-0 decision to Mississippi Valley State.

TSU finished 28-16, setting a school record for victories and giving coach Worley Barker his second winning season in three years. The Tigers’ 2-2 finish in the SWAC tournament was their best showing since achieving the same mark in 2005. Pitcher Rebecca Villarreal was named to the All-SWAC first team, with first baseman Brianna Parker, shortstop Princess Daniels and outfielders Monica Castillo and Charyce Arnold earning spots on the second team.

Prairie View went 21-19 under interim coach Vernon Bland, earning its most victories since 2005 and capturing its first winning season since 2003. The Panthers qualified for the SWAC tournament for the first time since 2008, going 2-2 in Irondale. Catcher Shontel Lopez was named SWAC Freshman of the Year and placed on the first team, with pitcher Cally Falls landing on the second team.

Huskies get honors

Houston Baptist freshman Brice Christian was named Great West Conference Male Newcomer of the Year in track after winning the 400 meters and long jump and leading the Huskies to the gold medal in the 1,600 relay at the GWC outdoor meet. Huskies junior Brittane Gaines won the women’s 100 meters in a school-record 11.62 seconds, securing a spot in the NCAA West Regional at Austin in two weeks.

HBU senior golfer Paige Gibson was named Great West Conference Player of the Year. She was also named to the All-GWC first team for the fourth straight year, joined by junior Kelsey Lou-Hing and sophomore Katie Paxton. Senior Natasha Lee and sophomores Jessica Ngui and Jenny Kang received second-team honors.

The tryout is free for players with the proper paperwork and $20 for those without an updated transcript. Participants should reserve a tryout through head coach Todd Smith at 713-831-7214 or tsmith1@stthom.edu. Walk-ups will be allowed on the day of the tryout.

Jeremiah Horrigan

Community colleges have traditionally been considered the less prestigious educational path for high school graduates.

They were established in the early 20th century as an alternative to four-year colleges. Their focus was primarily vocational. Their students didn’t have time for strolling the groves of academe. Jobs were of the essence.

Today community colleges can laugh up their sleeves at the four-year institutions that have increasingly adopted the practical, jobs-oriented paradigm that has always been offered at community colleges. “Experiential learning,” a phrase that four-year colleges are fond of using these days, was practically coined at community colleges.

“We’re always getting students ready for the world of work with mock interviews, resume reviews, what to wear to at interviews,” said Petra Wege-Beers, director of the office of careers and counseling at SUNY Orange.

Because community colleges offer certification programs and courses in such specific realms as health care and criminal justice, students concerned about their post-collegiate lives may even have a leg up on four-year college students, with more choices and more time to explore job possibilities in a shrinking job market.

At SUNY Sullivan, roughly 50 percent of the student body is enrolled in technical or vocational programs, according to spokesman Vince Begley.

Networking is also something the community colleges specialize in; Begley uses the example of the college’s culinary program, which has produced a number of regional chefs who offer opportunities for graduates.

Karen Robinson, director of Career Services at SUNY Ulster, said she’s been seeing improvement in the job picture since February.

“We’ve been seeing more job postings, and that’s encouraging,” she said.

But, as with all the employment these days, there’s a caveat: “It’s still an employer’s market.”
